Dubai

The laboratory of the future

D ubai became famous for building the impossible, and for years that read as a caricature of excess. That reading is long behind us.

The essence

A city you design, not stumble through

D ubai became famous for building the impossible, and for years that read as a caricature of excess. That reading is long behind us. The city today delivers something far more interesting: a genuine blend of living Arab tradition, landmark contemporary architecture, world-class gastronomy and a logistical infrastructure that turns any itinerary into a seamless operation. Measured against other regional capitals, it competes on three concrete advantages: connectivity · it is the natural hub between Europe, Asia and Africa · genuinely high security, and a compressed contrast that no other destination delivers. Dubai is a city for curating, more than for drifting. It is an auteur destination · it works when someone reads it with discernment, chooses the right hotels, the right conservation safari and an Emirati guide who can translate what lies beneath the postcard.

Practical

The essentials before you travel

Information verified by our travel designers, updated for 2026.

Money

Currency
UAE dirham (AED). Pegged to the US dollar since 1997 at a fixed rate of approximately 3.67 AED per USD (verify before travel).
Cards
Visa and Mastercard work virtually everywhere: hotels, restaurants, taxis and shopping malls. American Express accepted at the upper end.
Cash
Used at souks, for tips, small cafés and the Creek abra. Carry 500–1,000 AED per person per week.
Exchange
Al Ansari and UAE Exchange offer good rates. Avoid changing money at hotels, where the rate is 5–8% worse.
Fixed prices
Prices in shopping malls are fixed; negotiation is only customary in traditional souks.
Gratuities
Restaurants typically add a 10% service charge; it is customary to add a further 5% if service was exceptional. Drivers and porters expect a tip.

Visa

Latin America
Most Latin American passports receive a tourist visa on arrival or are exempt for short stays.
Spain
Spanish nationals enter without a tourist visa for short stays.
Passport
Must be valid for at least six months on entry. UAE immigration policy is updated frequently · verify before travel.
Documents
Carry a printed itinerary and your first confirmed hotel night in case an immigration officer requests them.
Border control
Many nationalities use facial recognition kiosks. Processing typically takes five to twenty minutes.

Health

Vaccinations
In general no vaccinations are required to enter from Latin America or Spain under normal conditions.
Insurance
Strongly recommended with international medical coverage. Private hospitals operate to international standards.
Water
Tap water is safe, but most people prefer bottled water for taste.
Heat
The main risk is the heat from May to September. Stay consistently hydrated, wear a hat and limit sun exposure.
Pharmacies
Plentiful and open 24 hours. Qualified staff for minor health matters.

Transport

Metro
Automated, modern and quiet, with Red and Green lines. Connects the airport, Downtown and the Marina. Prepaid Nol card.
Apps
Uber and Careem operate seamlessly across the city; Careem is better integrated with local usage patterns.
Taxis
Official, metered, safe and plentiful. Pink taxis are driven by women.
Private driver
The CocoVolare standard: an SUV with a driver for intensive exploration days and excursions to Abu Dhabi or Hatta.
Distances
Dubai is linear but enormous: from the airport to the Marina is 30 km. It is not a city for walking around.

Language

Official
Arabic. English functions as a de facto second language throughout the city.
Signage
All official signs appear in both Arabic and English.
Hotels
In international hotels with multilingual concierge desks, Spanish occasionally appears, though it is not standard.
Population
Almost 90% is international: Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, English and Arabic coexist daily.
Our approach
CocoVolare works with Emirati guides who translate cultural codes well beyond mere language.

Etiquette

Public affection
Intense physical displays of affection between couples are frowned upon. Holding hands as a married couple is tolerated.
Alcohol
Only consumed in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants. Drinking in the street is prohibited.
Photography
Do not photograph local women without permission, nor government buildings, palaces or military installations.
Ramadan
During the fasting month, it is respectful to refrain from eating or drinking in public during daylight, even as a visitor.
Right hand
Give and receive with the right hand. Never decline a welcome coffee when it is offered.

Investment

What it costs, no fine print

Dubai is the most expensive destination on your list, and it knows it: here, luxury is the local currency. The good news is that competition among ultra-luxury hotels creates real opportunities in summer and Ramadan, and that the spectacle (fountains, souks, desert) costs little or nothing.

What we would tell a friend

Advice from our travel designers: what we book first, what we avoid, and the details that turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.

01

Colombians: the visa is arranged beforehand, not on landing

The UAE's visa on arrival does not apply to the Colombian passport: you need a pre-approved tourist visa, processed through the airline (Emirates, Avianca via alliances), the hotel or your agency. It takes 3 to 7 business days; we include it in every file and verify it, because the rules change.

02

November to March: the city at its best

It's the season when the desert cools at dusk, the terraces open and prices hit their ceiling. Summer (May–September) cuts rates by up to 40%, but at 45 °C the plan is spa, malls and restaurants. Choose by what you're after; both Dubais exist.

03

The Burj Khalifa sunset sells out first

'At the Top' slots at golden hour vanish weeks ahead, and the difference versus midday is enormous: city, desert and gulf lit up at once. Book the moment you have dates, or go up to level 148 with priority access and a private lounge.

04

Dress freely, but read the room

At hotels, beaches and the Marina the code is Western. In souks, mosques and old Dubai, covered shoulders and knees are the expected courtesy. During Ramadan, avoid eating and drinking on the street by day: the city appreciates it and you experience the most hospitable month of the year.

05

Old Dubai costs one dirham

Cross the Creek on a wooden abra for 1 AED, get lost in the gold and spice souks and finish in Al Fahidi among coral houses and wind towers. It's the city's most authentic half day, and its cheapest. Haggling in the souk is part of the game; in the mall, it isn't.

06

The weekend is Saturday–Sunday, and brunch is religion

Since 2022 the UAE has kept the Western weekend. The grand brunch (hours at the table, live stations, champagne) happens on Saturday, and the best ones sell out. Alcohol is served only in hotels and licensed venues; drinking on the street is prohibited.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to enter Dubai?

Most Latin American and Spanish passport holders receive a tourist visa on arrival or are exempt for short stays, but requirements change frequently. Always confirm with the UAE consulate before travel. Your passport must have at least six months of remaining validity.

What is the best time to visit Dubai?

November to March is the best season, with mild winter weather, gentle days and cool evenings. January and February are peak months. April and October are shoulder months with good rates and moderate heat. Summer · May to September · is avoided when the thermometer exceeds 40 degrees and life moves entirely indoors.

How many days do I need to see Dubai?

Five days cover Dubai, one desert night and a day in Abu Dhabi. Seven to ten days allow you to add Ras Al Khaimah and the deep Empty Quarter desert. Fourteen days open up Sharjah and Arabia's fjords at Musandam, Oman. CocoVolare designs itineraries from five to twenty-one days.

What currency is used in Dubai?

The UAE dirham (AED), pegged to the US dollar since 1997 at a fixed rate of approximately 3.67 AED per USD · giving welcome stability to trip planning. Cards work virtually everywhere: hotels, restaurants, taxis and shopping malls. Cash is used at souks, for tips and on the Creek abra.

Is it safe to travel to Dubai?

Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world in terms of crime. A woman can take a taxi alone at midnight without incident. What is worth knowing are the local legal codes: public displays of affection between couples, alcohol consumption outside licensed venues and photographing people have specific rules that are worth respecting.

How much does a trip to Dubai cost?

A boutique seven-day trip, excluding international flights, starts at around USD 3,500 per person in a four-star boutique hotel with a private safari and transfers. CocoVolare signature itineraries start from USD 3,200 per person for five days. In Dubai, paying more doesn't buy more things · it buys silence, time and access.

Is Abu Dhabi worth visiting from Dubai?

Yes. Abu Dhabi is 90 minutes by road and merits at least a full day: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque · one of the most impressive architectural achievements in the Arab world · the Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel and the Qasr Al Watan palace. You enter Dubai to live; you enter Abu Dhabi to reflect.

What is the desert like on a Dubai trip?

The recommended option is a private safari in a conservation reserve, with a dedicated vehicle, falconry with a master falconer and a private dune dinner under the stars, away from any group. CocoVolare avoids the mass four-by-four safari with a buffet dinner and prioritises the conservation experience · far more memorable.

Can you drink alcohol in Dubai?

Yes, it is legal for non-Muslims in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants, which covers the great majority of tourist venues. What is prohibited is consuming alcohol in the street or in unlicensed public spaces, and drink-driving carries zero tolerance.

Is Dubai a good destination for families?

It is among the finest in the world for travelling with children: complete safety, seamless transport, hotels with interconnecting rooms and an enormous leisure offer that never feels artificial. Aquaventure, the Dubai Mall aquarium, Green Planet and the desert with falconry narrated as a story work at every age.

Do I need to hire a car in Dubai?

Not for the city itself: the metro, taxis and Careem or Uber handle every journey without the friction of finding parking and paying tolls. CocoVolare includes a private driver for intensive exploration days. Hiring a car only makes sense if you plan to drive to Hatta or independently to Abu Dhabi.

What does a CocoVolare trip to Dubai include?

Itinerary design from scratch, boutique hotels with breakfast, private driver with SUV, Emirati guides, a conservation safari, signature experiences such as a private dune dinner or a private yacht, managed priority access, chef reservations and 24/7 concierge. Every trip is designed around your pace, profile, dates and budget.
