Barranquilla Carnival

Only those who live it can truly enjoy it

An entire country, dancing in Barranquilla

UNESCO · Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The celebration

An entire country, dancing in Barranquilla

On Colombia’s northern coast, over the Magdalena river, a whole city becomes the country’s greatest festive stage each year. UNESCO declared it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity: centuries of indigenous, African and European blending turned into dance, music, costumes and characters that exist nowhere else.

CocoVolare opens the right doors so you enter the celebration without friction: access already arranged, private transport waiting and an accompaniment that lets you focus on the only thing that matters, letting go.

Barranquilla Carnival

The moments

4 acts worth the whole trip

Coronation Gala Act 1

Coronation Gala

The night the Carnival awakens: in a gala staging, the Queen and King Momo are proclaimed, with music, sets and lights. A whole city holds its breath.

Batalla de Flores · Vía 40 Act 2

Batalla de Flores · Vía 40

The most emblematic parade and one of the largest in Latin America: monumental floats, queens throwing petals and a human river along Vía 40. You, in an official box.

Gran Parada de Tradición Act 3

Gran Parada de Tradición

No floats, no effects: pure folklore. Cumbias, mapalés, garabatos, congos and son de negro parading in the open air. The Carnival’s ancestral soul.

Carnival Social Night Act 4

Carnival Social Night

The gala that closes the biggest day: live music at an iconic hotel, an elegant crowd and a Caribbean in black tie that never stops dancing.

Symbols

Characters that only live here

Marimondas

Long-eared masks with drooping trunks and striped suits. Popular satire of the powerful, born in Barrio Abajo. The most recognizable character.

Congos

Mirrored capes, turbans and colorful tails. They represent the African slaves who defended their freedom by dancing.

Garabato

The dance of life and death: dancers dodge Death with a curved stick. Colonial Catholicism and African worldview in synthesis.

Negritas Puloy

Red polka-dot skirt, white headscarf and painted face. An affectionate caricature born of the Puloy soap brand.

Carnival Queen

The sovereign who reads the proclamation, crowns the celebration and leads the Batalla de Flores.

Joselito Carnaval

The character who dies at the end of the celebration to be reborn the next year. His festive burial closes the Carnival.

Cumbia

The mother rhythm of the Colombian Caribbean: drums, gaitas and lit candles spinning in pairs.

Mapalé

The most electric rhythm: pure African percussion and bodies that barely seem to touch the ground.
