Austria

The heart of Europe

A ustria is the centre of Europe in both a literal and figurative sense · by geography, by imperial history and by an aesthetic sensibility inherited from the Habsburgs.

The essence

The country that speaks in a quiet voice

A ustria is the centre of Europe in both a literal and figurative sense · by geography, by imperial history and by an aesthetic sensibility inherited from the Habsburgs. What sets it apart from Switzerland, Germany or Italy is the sum of all of them rather than any single thing. It has Alps every bit as imposing as the Swiss ones, yet more intertwined with urban culture. It has Central European cuisine with German discipline and Italian freedom. It has a capital, Vienna, where an opera ticket costs less than a cocktail in Manhattan and where coffee has been served with the same care since 1840. And it has a human scale that surprises: nine provinces, eight million inhabitants, everything connected by ÖBB trains that arrive on the minute. For the CocoVolare traveller, Austria is a destination to be designed, not merely toured.

1,441 rooms in Schönbrunn Palace · nearly double the number at Versailles
7,000 years of Hallstatt's salt mine · the oldest in the world
9 federal provinces in a country of human scale
645 years of Habsburg rule · the longest dynasty in European history

Vienna is the capital of an empire that no longer exists, and any attentive visitor feels it immediately. Practical

The essentials before you travel

Information verified by our travel designers, updated for 2026.

Money

Currency
The euro (EUR). Austria has been fully integrated into the eurozone since 2002.
Cash
Carry EUR 200 to 400 per week for small Heuriger taverns, markets, tips and public toilets at stations.
Cards
Visa and Mastercard accepted almost everywhere: hotels, restaurants, museums and public transport. American Express has more limited coverage.
ATMs
Bankomat machines are everywhere. Avoid currency exchanges in tourist areas, which typically charge up to 12% above the official rate.
Public toilets
Usually cost EUR 0.50 to 1. Keep small coins to hand.
Gratuities
5–10% in restaurants; round up in cafés. State the total amount when paying · do not leave change on the table.

Visa

Schengen Area
Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Tourist stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period are permitted.
ETIAS
From 2026, visa-exempt travellers must obtain the ETIAS electronic travel authorisation, at approximately EUR 7 and valid for three years.
Latin America
Colombians, Mexicans and most South Americans do not require a tourist visa · only ETIAS and a valid passport.
Spain
Spanish citizens enter without any immigration formality.
Passport
Must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Verify immigration rules before travel.

Health

Vaccinations
No compulsory vaccines are required from Latin America or Europe. Keep tetanus, measles and hepatitis vaccinations up to date.
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE)
Relevant only if your itinerary includes extended trekking in Alpine forests in summer. Use repellent and check your skin.
Insurance
International travel insurance with European medical cover of at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended. Allianz, IATI and Assist Card provide good Austria coverage.
Water
Tap water is excellent throughout the country. Vienna's water has been piped from Alpine springs without chemical treatment since 1873.
Emergencies
The European number 112 operates at all times and in any language. Austria's healthcare system is among the best in the world.

Transport

ÖBB trains
The backbone of the transport network. Connects all cities with strict punctuality. Sparschiene fares from EUR 9 when booked in advance.
Westbahn
Private operator on the Vienna–Salzburg route, with competitive fares from EUR 9.99.
Car
Recommended for road trips through the Wachau, the Salzkammergut and the Tyrol. Unnecessary for Vienna and Salzburg · the train is superior.
Urban apps
Bolt and FreeNow are the main taxi apps. Uber operates in Vienna. WienMobil integrates metro, tram and bike.
Transfers
CocoVolare includes a private driver in a premium saloon or van with a welcome sign and an on-board briefing.

Language

Official language
Austrian German, with its own distinct accent and vocabulary. It is not identical to German as spoken in Germany.
English
Under-50s speak it fluently. In rural areas and among older generations it may be more limited.
Local greeting
Grüß Gott is the formal hello; Servus is informal. Making the effort to pronounce it opens doors.
Useful vocabulary
Danke (thank you) · Bitte (please) · Entschuldigung (excuse me) · Auf Wiedersehen (goodbye) · Prost (cheers).
Our approach
CocoVolare prioritises guides with strong English fluency for all English-speaking clients.

Etiquette

Punctuality
Arrive on the dot. Five minutes late is late; ten is rude. Send a message if you are running behind.
Austria is Austria
Austrians and Germans share a language, not a nationality. Calling an Austrian German is offensive. The Schnitzel is Austrian · it comes from Vienna.
Silence
Speak quietly on public transport. Video calls and raised voices draw immediate stares.
At table
Do not start eating until everyone has been served. Toast with Prost maintaining eye contact with each person.
History
Do not make jokes about Nazism, the Anschluss or the war. It is painful history, not comedic material.

The Vienna Philharmonic performs its celebrated concert in the golden hall of the Musikverein, broadcast to ninety countries every first of January.

The summer Alpine season: trails through the Tyrol and the Karwendel, the Salzkammergut lakes and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

What we would tell a friend

Advice from our travel designers: what we book first, what we avoid, and the details that turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.

01

Book the Opera before the flight

Staatsoper performances go on sale two months out and the good seats vanish on day one. The smart traveler's plan B: standing-room tickets sell 80 minutes before curtain for about 15 EUR, with the very same acoustics.

02

Salzburg is yours before 10:00

Tour buses arrive mid-morning and the Getreidegasse becomes a river. Sleep in the city, breakfast early and ride the first funicular up to Hohensalzburg fortress: you will have Mozartland almost to yourself.

03

Nobody rushes you in a Viennese café

The Kaffeehaus is UNESCO heritage and runs by its own rules: the tuxedoed waiter brings water unasked, the newspaper belongs to the house and the table is yours for hours. Order a Melange and never rush the bill, it would be almost an offense.

04

Hallstatt: sleep there or swap it

The village receives ten thousand daily visitors in summer for 750 residents. If you truly want it, stay one night and live it from 7:00 to 9:00; if not, the Wachau valley delivers the same postcard Austria, with wine and without the crowds.

05

December and February are different Austrias

Advent markets turn Vienna and Salzburg into Christmas scenography from mid-November. Then from January to February comes ball season: four hundred white-tie waltz nights that book out, tailcoat included, months in advance.

06

Buy the train like a local

ÖBB Railjets link Vienna and Salzburg in 2 hours 22 minutes. The advance Sparschiene fare costs half, and Austrian first class (wide seats, at-seat service) is one of Europe's best-kept rail secrets.

“We had our own box at the Wiener Staatsoper, looking straight at the curtain. CocoVolare had reserved it five months in advance. Then the Sachertorte arrived in the suite by room service. That night we understood what it means to design a trip · not buy one.”

“We arrived in Hallstatt at half past six in the morning. There was mist over the lake and not a soul on the jetty. By nine the village was full of buses. CocoVolare had calculated it to the minute: that hour is worth more than two museums.”

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to enter Austria?

Travellers from Colombia, Mexico and most of Latin America do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. From 2026, visa-exempt travellers must obtain the ETIAS electronic travel authorisation, at approximately EUR 7 and valid for three years. Spanish citizens enter without any formality. Your passport must have at least six months of remaining validity from the date of entry.

What is the best time to visit Austria?

For cultural cities, May, June and September offer ideal weather, gardens in bloom and fewer tourists than in summer. For skiing, mid-December to March, with January and February as the most stable weeks. For Christmas markets, from late November to 24 December. November and the April before Easter are the least recommended windows.

How many days do I need to see Austria?

Five days cover Vienna and Salzburg in a compact but coherent way. Seven to ten days add the Salzkammergut with Hallstatt and the Tyrolean Alps. Fourteen days allow for Carinthia with the southern lakes and Styria with Graz. CocoVolare designs itineraries from five to twenty-one days depending on pace, profile and season.

What currency is used in Austria?

The euro (EUR). Austria has been fully integrated into the eurozone since 2002. Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere, including in traditional cafés and on public transport. It is worth carrying EUR 200 to 400 per week in cash for small Heuriger taverns, markets, tips and public toilets at railway stations.

Is it safe to travel to Austria?

Yes. Austria consistently ranks among the ten safest countries in the world on the Global Peace Index. Violent crime rates are among the lowest in Europe. The only practical risk is pickpocketing in busy tourist areas such as Stephansplatz, Westbahnhof station and the Vienna metro. CocoVolare operates with accommodation and transfers that minimise exposure.

How much does a trip to Austria cost?

A boutique ten-day trip, excluding international flights, falls in the comfort band between USD 6,100 and 10,600 per person in double occupancy. CocoVolare signature itineraries start from USD 2,800 per person for five days. Every quote is adjusted to your actual travel window, as rates vary by season, city and events.

Is the Vienna Opera worth it?

Yes, and it is the finest musical experience the journey offers. The Wiener Staatsoper has a performance almost every night from September to June. Standing room tickets cost EUR 13 to 18 and go on sale 80 minutes before curtain; proper seats are reserved three to six months in advance. It is far superior to the tourist Mozart concerts with wigged musicians sold on every street corner.

Is English widely spoken in Austria?

The official language is Austrian German, with its own accent and vocabulary. Those under 50 speak English fluently throughout the tourism sector, hotels, restaurants and as guides. In rural areas and among older generations it may be more limited. Greeting with a Grüß Gott · however imperfect · is greatly appreciated and opens doors. CocoVolare prioritises guides with strong English fluency where relevant.

Is Hallstatt worth it?

Yes, but when you go matters more than how long. The village is genuinely spectacular, but receives 7,000 to 10,000 visitors a day in high season, concentrated into six hours. The secret is to stay overnight in Hallstatt or nearby Bad Goisern to see it empty at dawn. The flash visit by bus from Salzburg at midday is overrated.

Is Salzburg or Innsbruck better?

It depends on your profile. Salzburg has the Festival, Mozart, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Hellbrunn, plus the finest balance of culture, landscape and value in the country. Innsbruck has the Alps fifteen minutes away by funicular, winter sports and quick access to Lech and Kitzbühel. CocoVolare combines both in longer itineraries.

Is Austria a good foodie destination?

Yes, and one of the most underrated in Europe. Austria has sixteen Michelin-starred restaurants, several with two or more stars. Imperial cuisine blends Bohemian, Hungarian and Italian roots, and native wines such as Grüner Veltliner have conquered London and New York. A three-star tasting menu in Vienna costs a fraction of its equivalent in Paris or London.

Can I travel to Austria with children?

Yes, with a well-adapted design: fewer museums per day and more active experiences. Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest in the world in continuous operation since 1752; Vienna's Haus der Musik is fully interactive; Hellbrunn's water games in Salzburg soak everyone; and in the Tyrol there are Alpine parks with summer toboggan runs. Austria is also a very safe and walkable country.

What does a CocoVolare trip to Austria include?

Itinerary design from scratch, first-class ÖBB trains, domestic flights where applicable, boutique hotels with breakfast, private transfers with a driver, certified cultural guides, signature experiences, museum and concert tickets, an Opera box and 24/7 concierge. Every journey is designed from scratch to your profile, pace and season, with a quote delivered within 24 hours.
